Watch Lance Stephenson blow in LeBron James' ear during Game 5

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 29 Mei 2014 | 23.50

Indiana shooting guard Lance Stephenson had a solid night statistically on Wednesday, with 12 points, five assists and five rebounds during the Pacers' 93-90 victory over Miami in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

But it was Stephenson's intangibles that really helped the Pacers extend the series against the Heat.

You know, those intangibles you're always hearing about when pundits are discussing athletes -- things like sneaking into the other team's huddle or blowing into the ear of your opponent, who just happens to be the best player in the NBA.

OK, so maybe those examples aren't the intangibles most players bring to the table. But those are some of the strategies Stephenson employed to help his team win a do-or-die game.

Of course, it probably helped that Stephenson's teammate Paul George had 37 points and 13 rebounds. And foul trouble may have had more to do with Heat superstar Lebron James' subpar night (seven points, two rebounds and four assists in just 24 1/2 minutes).

"I made a couple in the fourth, but 24 minutes is not enough time for me to make an imprint on the game," James said.

He added: "I'm just trying to win. We need one more win to get to the finals. That's my only concern. All the extra stuff, whatever Lance wants to do, I don't really care about that."

Still, if nothing else, James appeared to at least be amused by Stephenson's antics. Check out his reaction to the ear-blowing incident in the video above.

Economy shrinks for first time in 3 years; markets shrug off report

The economy performed worse than initially estimated amid severe winter weather in the first quarter, contracting for the first time in three years. But the stock markets shrugged off the news in early trading.

The Commerce Department said Thursday the nation's total economic output decreased at a 1% annual rate from January through March, down significantly from the government's first estimate of weak, but positive, 0.1% growth for the period.

Recent data indicate that the recovery has picked up this spring.

But the new report shows just how bad things were during the winter and how much ground the economy has to make up to hit the 3% overall growth for 2014 that economists had been hoping for.

"The U.S. recovery took a backward step in the first quarter, most likely the result of many parts of the country having been battered by extreme weather at the start of the year," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit, a financial information firm.

"However, current indicators suggest this was merely a temporary setback in an otherwise ongoing robust recovery, pointing to a strong rebound in the second quarter," he said.

The stock market shrugged off the GDP report in early trading Thursday, with investors betting that the first quarter's inclement weather was a temporary force that wouldn't hold back the economy as the year progressed.

Major stock indexes dipped briefly after the GDP report was issued but quickly bounced back and were sitting on modest gains.

The Standard & Poor's 50 index ticked up slightly to its latest record high. As of 9:15 a.m. Pacific, it was up 0.2%. The Down Jones industrial average was up 24.30 points, or 0.2%.

Bitter cold and heavier-than-normal snowfall in much of the country led economists to anticipate a drop in output in the first quarter. Analysts expected the government's first estimate, released last month, would be revised down on Thursday.

But the falloff was greater than anticipated. The consensus among economists was that the economy contracted at a 0.5% annual rate in the first quarter.

Driving the first-quarter drop in economic output was a larger decline in business investment in inventories than originally estimated.

Private businesses increased their inventories by $49 billion in the first quarter, sharply down from $111.7 billion in the fourth quarter of last year.

Consumer spending stayed about the same as in the first estimate last month, but the 3.1% increase was down from 3.3% in the fourth quarter of the year.

The economy expanded at a 2.6% annual rate in the fourth quarter. The last time output, also known as gross domestic product, contracted was in the first quarter of 2011, when growth was -1.3%.

The first-quarter drop in output was just the second time since the Great Recession ended in June 2009 that the economy contracted. A recession normally is considered two consecutive quarters of negative output.

The economy has improved with the warmer weather, and economists are forecasting growth to accelerate the rest of the year. Federal Reserve policymakers estimate that the economy will expand between 2.1% and 3% for the year.

In a sign of the improvement, initial jobless claims dropped last week by 27,000 to 300,000, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The figure was near the lowest level in seven years, and the number of people receiving unemployment benefits for the week ended May 17, the most recent data available, fell to 2.63 million, the lowest level since November 2007.

TV ratings: 'America's Got Talent' steady; 'Idol'-less Fox crashes

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 28 Mei 2014 | 23.50

NBC easily won in Tuesday night ratings with the mostly steady return of "America's Got Talent," while Fox's lineup cratered without "American Idol."

"Talent" was the top show in both total viewership and among key 18- to-49-year-olds, according to early numbers from Nielsen.

The Season 9 premiere of the unscripted show — featuring judges Heidi Klum, Howard Stern, Howie Mandel and Mel B. — averaged 11.9-million viewers overall and earned a 3.0 in 18-to-49, where a ratings point equals about 1.3-million viewers.

In 18-to-49, that's down a tenth of a point from last summer's season debut, which had ratings juggernaut "The Voice" as a lead-in.

In prime time, NBC averaged a 2.5 in 18-to-49, more than double second-place ABC (1.2).

Meanwhile, Fox's new shows struggled Tuesday.

The improv series "Riot" improved from its minuscule showing two weeks ago but still managed only a 0.6 in 18-to-49. Also, the critically panned reality show "I Wanna Marry 'Harry'" is getting few suitors, falling 43% from its "American Idol"-boosted premiere a week ago to a 0.4.

Though headlines have long focused on declines for the veteran singing contest, it's clear "AI's" absence leaves a big hole in Fox's lineup.

On ABC, "Extreme Weight Loss" returned with its new season, rising 8% from a year ago to a 1.3 in 18-to-49. After that, "Celebrity Wife Swap" switched higher from last week, earning a 1.2 in the key demographic for a weekly improvement of 33%.

CBS was all in repeats.

'X-Men' crushes foes at China box office, scores $38-million weekend

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" scored big in China last week, pulling in almost $38 million in its first three days of release -- the best opening weekend for any Hollywood film so far in 2014.

For the week ending Sunday, "X-Men" took the top spot at the box office, data from industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway showed. Its haul was nearly double that of the No. 2 film, "Coming Home," renown director Zhang Yimou's tale of a family trying to put itself back together again after the Cultural Revolution. The movie made $20 million during the week, bringing its cumulative take to nearly $33.9 million.

20th Century Fox worked hard to promote "X-Men" in China, bringing stars Hugh Jackman and Peter Dinklage to Beijing for a press tour. Chinese actress Fan Bingbing also has a small part in the film.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" continued to ensnare moviegoers in its web, earning almost $10.9 million for the week. The Sony Pictures film has grossed a total of $90.6 million in China so far, Artisan said.

Rounding out fourth and fifth place were two local films that have performed strongly since their releases in late April. "The Great Hypnotist" came in at No. 4 with $3.3 million, bringing its cumulative total to $44.1 million. "My Old Classmate" brought in $2.3 million, and its cumulative total now stands at more than $73.3 million.

At Indy 500, Mark Cuban says Clippers are worth more than $1 billion

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 25 Mei 2014 | 23.51

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Sunday that the Clippers are worth more than $1 billion.

"Far north of $1 billion," Cuban said at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the billionaire and Indiana University graduate was the honorary starter for the Indianapolis 500.

As part of the NBA's sweeping sanctions against Clippers owner Donald Sterling over his controversial racial remarks, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is urging the league's other owners to push for the Clippers' sale.

"I wouldn't be shocked if the bidding starts at $1.5 billion," Cuban said in a brief interview before the race.

Asked how soon the owners might decide whether to force the sale, Cuban replied, "No idea." And when he was asked whether there would be numerous bidders for the team, he said, "I have no idea about that."

There are expected to be several suitors for the Clippers if the club becomes available. Sterling bought the team for $12.5 million in 1981.

Freddie Mac: Mortgage rates decline again as 30-year averages 4.14%

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 22 Mei 2014 | 23.50

Mortgage rates fell for the fourth week in a row, with Freddie Mac pegging the average for a 30-year fixed home loan at 4.14%, down from 4.2% last week.

Not since the end of October have rates been so low, according to the survey -- an enticement for  borrowers to enter the sputtering housing market or in some cases refinance their homes.

The average offering rate for 15-year fixed mortgages dropped from 3.29% to 3.25%, Freddie Mac said Thursday -- also the lowest point since Halloween decorations were up.

The average start rate for a loan that becomes variable after five years fixed was 2.96%, down from 3.01% and the lowest since December.

The decline comes amid mixed economic news.

Freddie Mac's chief economist, Frank Nothaft, noted that industrial production slipped 0.6% in April, below consensus expectations. A slowing economy tends to reduce inflation worries and make bonds a more attractive investment, both of which put downward pressure on interest rates.

On the other hand, the housing market, which had been a drag on the economy, is showing flickers of life. Seasonally adjusted home resales rose 1.3% from March to April, the first gain this year, the National Assn. of Realtors said Thursday.

The trade association said the number of homes offered for sale had increased "meaningfully" as price increases moderated.

"We'll continue to see a balancing act between housing inventory and price growth, which remains stronger than normal simply because there have not been enough sellers in many areas," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the real-estate lobbying group.

"More inventory and increased new-home construction will help to foster healthy market conditions," Yun said.

Freddie Mac asks lenders early each week about the terms they are offering to solid borrowers. The borrowers in Thursday's survey would have paid about half of 1% of the loan amount in upfront fees to the lenders.

TV ratings: 'Idol' and 'Survivor' finales duel; 'Modern Family' wins

It was a ratings battle between aging reality shows Wednesday night as Fox's wannabe pop stars took on CBS' marooned survivors.

The season finales of Fox's "American Idol" and CBS' "Survivor" went head-to-head Wednesday, and though the singing contest has struggled with declining ratings in its 13th season, it looks like it narrowly beat its reality rival.

According to early numbers from Nielsen, "American Idol" averaged 10.1 million viewers, while "Survivor" had 9.3 million. "Idol" also was slightly ahead among the key 18-to-49-year-old audience, notching a rating of 2.6 vs. "Survivor's" 2.5.

A major caveat, though: "American Idol" overran its usual time slot by six minutes and "Survivor" overshot by longer (13 minutes), so the ratings for both are likely to change in the final numbers.

One thing not likely to change is that both are diminished from a year ago. The 2013 "Survivor" finale (which aired on a Sunday, so the comparison is not quite apples-to-apples) earned a 2.7 in 18-49 and 10.2 million viewers overall. "Idol" was down 28% from last year when it concluded on a Thursday.

While the reality stalwarts dueled, ABC's "Modern Family" ended its fifth season with a big wedding and another ratings victory, posting a rating of 3.6 in 18-49 and drawing 10.2 million viewers total. In overall viewership, that's up from last year but down by a tenth of a point in the key demographic group.

After the finale of its canceled comedy "Mixology," ABC debuted the new season of "Motive" to a 0.9 in 18-49, down 30% from last season's opener.

On NBC, the first season closer of the Dick Wolf spinoff "Chicago P.D." rose 7% from last week to a 1.6 in 18-49, after "Law & Order: SVU" ended its current cycle with the same number. "Revolution's" finale was down 45% year-over-year to a 1.1.

Libyan Interior Ministry backs anti-Islamist rogue ex-general

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 21 Mei 2014 | 23.51

Libya's Interior Ministry announced Wednesday it was throwing its support behind Khalifa Haftar, a former army general who last week launched an unauthorized armed offensive against Islamist militias and their political allies.

The tumult in the North African nation, previously a major oil producer, has shattered the country's fragile political order, with heavily armed militias across the country lining up behind the Islamists, Haftar or the weak central government.

Diplomats and representatives of foreign businesses, including some major energy concerns, have been abandoning Tripoli amid the deepening chaos. U.S. Marines were standing by in Sicily in case a decision is made to evacuate the American Embassy, according to officials in Washington.

The Interior Ministry's statement, reported by the official LANA news agency, marked the latest in a series of high-profile official defections from the central government, which has been trying to rein in Haftar and his forces. In the previous 24 hours, expressions of support for him had come from the head of Libya's air force, the country's ambassador to the United Nations and ousted Prime Minister Ali Zidan.

The impact of the ministry's decision to abide by "the will of the people" and back Haftar was not immediately clear. The ministry theoretically commands all police and paramilitary troops, but individual police units sometimes strike alliances with local militia chieftains.

Haftar has demanded the disbanding of the Islamist-dominated parliament, and the government responded by setting elections for June 25. But it appeared that concession would not satisfy the renegade ex-general.

More fighting erupted early Wednesday in the vicinity of Tripoli, and Reuters news service reported at least two deaths. Haftar is based in the eastern city of Benghazi, where he launched his offensive, but over the weekend his forces brought the battle to Tripoli, brazenly storming the parliament building.

Haftar, a onetime loyalist of toppled strongman Moammar Kadafi, returned to Libya in 2011 from the U.S., where he had been living, to take part in the uprising against him. He calls his forces the National Army, and has said he would be willing to become president if there was popular demand that he do so.

Mark Cuban gives struggling couple their dream wedding

Mark Cuban likes giving money away.

We've known that for years. He's been fined nearly $2 million during his 14 years as owner of the Dallas Mavericks, but that hasn't stopped the billionaire from running his mouth.

But sometimes Cuban finds much better things to do with his fortune than just financing a rant aimed at a league official.

Just ask Monica Wilkinson of Watauga, Texas. She and her fiancee had been planning on getting married since 2009, but a series of hardships -- including miscarriages, a late-term stillborn daughter and financial difficulties -- keep causing the big event to be put on the back burner.

Earlier this year, Wilkinson was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer. After emergency surgery, she is now undergoing chemotherapy, with radiation therapy still to come.

"It just was seeming like every dream we had was just completely out of reach for everything," Wilkinson said.

With medical bills piling up, the wedding seemed like one of those impossible dreams. Until Cuban stepped in and made it a reality.

"I got a call from his assistant," said Wilkinson, who had been making calls to various charitable organizations looking for funding for their wedding. "And she said Mark Cuban was going to help pay for our wedding. And I was completely floored. I thought it was a joke."

Apparently Cuban ended up financing the entire April affair, which Wilkinson described as her dream wedding.

"I felt like a princess," she said.

"Now we actually have those memories that can actually get us through. I can go back and have those pictures now and have a reason to smile. Because I got to feel special and it was all thanks to Mark Cuban."

Pretty sure former NBA Commissioner David Stern never felt that way after getting all those checks from Cuban through the years.

Kevin Smith, Ralph Garman dive into 'Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet'

Long before superhero teams became a box-office staple, there was Batman and the Green Hornet.

When the two heroes, along with their respective sidekicks Robin and Kato, teamed up in the second season of the "Batman" television series in the two-part episode "A Piece of the Action" and "Batman's Satisfaction," it marked the first time two masked avengers had joined forces on screen.

To commemorate the landmark moment, DC is launching "Batman '66 Meets the Green Hornet," a 12-part series premiering in digital form this week. Batman super-fans director Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman ("The Joe Schmo Show," "Family Guy") were tapped to pen the tale.

Smith is no stranger to crafting a Batman story, having worked on the limited series "Batman: Cacophony," which ran from 2008 to 2009 and the six-issue mini-series "The Widening Gyre" in 2010. He and Garman frequently collaborate on all things pop culture and Batman, as the pair co-host the "Hollywood Babble-On" podcast on Smith's "SModcast" channel and Garman often joins Smith on his "Fatman on Batman" show.

Judging by the exclusive preview pages, the pair's signature wit is on display. When Bruce Wayne and Britt Reid first run into each other on a train, the old schoolmates immediately begin hotly contesting the aesthetics of their alter egos' costumes. Later the pair struggle to make excuses to flee the scene and change into their crime-fighting gear.

The series, which hits stores June 4, will continue the successful run of the "Batman '66″ title, which began last year and features the Adam West version of the Caped Crusader taking on the classic rogues gallery from the television series, which ran from 1966 to 1968.

Hero Complex talked with Smith and Garman about "selling out" on Batman, avoiding irony and great moments in Bat-fandom.

Why is the '60s television series "Batman" so important to both of you?

Garman: I'm a huge fan of the 1966 show. This was my first Batman and still sort of my favorite Batman. Kevin's been much more wide-reaching with his scope of the character and I love the character in all the different versions, but this one has always been first and foremost. For me, this was a dream gig.

Smith: I've got something of a prodigal son thing going on with "Batman '66," because that was my very first Batman and I sold out on that Batman when I got back into comic books. I was reading Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns" and then soon after they were making Tim Burton's "Batman," so I was part of that generation that was like, "Oh, that old campy Batman ruined it man, this is dark Batman and he's back!" Which, it's spellbinding to think that we believed in 1989 that Tim Burton's "Batman" was "dark Batman," but still, we would sit there and be like, "Oh, that old campy stuff, Adam West, it's an embarrassment." But there's a great comic book writer and artist named Matt Wagner. He's one of the greatest talents in comics. And he was talking about including the term "chum" in a [Batman] book he wanted to do. And DC kind of kicked back at it, going, "Yeah, we don't want anyone thinking about the old TV show anymore so we don't want you to have him call someone 'chum.' " And I was going "Oh yeah, that's right, who wants to think about that old Batman?" And Matt Wagner said, "Don't do that dude, don't sell out on your Batman. That was your first Batman. The only reason you know about hard-ass Batman is because you fell in love with the other Batman. With smiling Batman, with Batman on TV." He was like, "Be a man, stand up for your Batman." Which is the weirdest thing you could say to somebody about pop culture, "Be a man, own up to your Batman." (laughs)

There's a bit of a paradox there.

Smith: But he was right and when I got lectured by one of the greats, I was like, "You're right, man." So I went out there like an apostle, telling everyone, "Quit selling out on Batman!"

You both have a serious appreciation for the show, but a big part of that Batman for people is the irony or kitsch factor. Does that factor into how you craft the story?

Garman: The goal is to shoot for the first season of the show when Lorenzo Semple Jr. had the reins, and for the 1966 feature film as well, because they really showed how to strike that balance: You play it straight. You play it as if it's the most serious thing in the world and out of that seriousness, maybe over-seriousness, that's where any sense of humor or fun comes from. You don't play it broad, you don't play it for the jokes, you just play it as if this guy is a hero and he does all the right things for all the right reasons. And he's square and he's solid and he's true and you know, in the current climate, politically and socially, that automatically makes it a little funny, so you really don't have to stretch to find that balance, you just have to play it straight.

Smith: The only thing you have to do is kind of fight the urge of like, "Let's make a double entendre," because they didn't really do that that much, man. That's certainly not what that TV show ever did, so why would we do it in the book? You know, like Ralph said, they played it kind of straight.

You've said that this series will appeal to old fans who grew up watching the show. Is part of the appeal of this project also that it could convert new fans or people who don't even really know about this version of Batman?

Smith: Hell, yeah, and this iteration of the character is so kid-friendly as well. As kids have seen over the last five, even 10 years, there are many Batmans with many different faces. The one they see in the movies, the one they see in the cartoons, the one that they see in the video game that they play to death. So now there's a chance for kids to read a Batman comic that's kid-safe, that's kid-friendly. You don't have to explain to your kid, "Well, this is what a hooker is." So it is kind of a door into a Batman that a kid could appreciate. That's how I fell in love with Batman; as a 5-year-old kid with this iteration. So, why couldn't it capture another kid's imagination?

Garman: And I think "Batman: The Brave and Bold" proved there's an audience for a lighter Batman too, especially for kids.

Smith: Oh, so true, so true. I mean that is lighter Batman, essentially. You're right, I hadn't even thought of that, Ralph. I'm like "Oh, look at us, we're like the first men on the moon, bringing Batman back to kids!" And it's like, "The kids know Batman."

It's easy to see how much of an influence Batman had on you both. But growing up, what was your relationship like with the Green Hornet?

Garman: That two-parter [Batman TV episode] was huge for me. Kevin often says this, it's the first time we ever saw two superheroes share a screen, you know?

Smith: It was like our Avengers, man

Garman: And it really introduced me to the Green Hornet. Being passionate about the series, I went out and sought out all the bootlegs of that one season of the Green Hornet because I wanted to know more about that character and Bruce Lee (who played Kato) was so magnetic in it, it just had so much to offer.

Smith: I just knew him from the two-parter. You know, you always respected it because you're like, "Bruce Lee's in it and he's got his own car." Even if you didn't watch the entire run of the Green Hornet, you knew the Black Beauty. It's like one of the Top 10 television cars and superhero – or masked avenger – cars of all time. So, years later man, when they had the idea for a Green Hornet movie at Miramax at one point and Harvey [Weinstein] was like, "Do you want to write and direct the Green Hornet?" I was like, "Oh, heaven's yes," so I'd had some involvement with it there as well. Then that movie didn't happen and Seth Rogen went and made his of course, but that script got turned into a comic book with Dynamite, so this gig happened with "Batman '66," through Dynamite.

Ralph, you went to your wedding in a 1966 replica Batmobile. Is that correct?

Garman: That is absolutely true. I was chauffeured to my wedding by Batman.

Would you say that that was your most extreme fan moment?

Garman: Well, I helped Adam West get his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And for me, that was the most gratifying and also the most surreal moment of my life. I said, "If my 8-year-old self could talk to me right now, he'd say, 'All right, you're done. You don't need to do anything else. You can just lay down now.' "

Kevin, what about you?

Smith: Now if I say anything … you know what I'm saying? (laughter) He helped Batman get a star on the Walk of Fame, you know? Like, I was gonna say, "I saw Tim Burton's 'Batman' eight times in the theater in one day!" That's nothing compared to what Ralph did.

That's true. You gotta know when to fold them.

Smith: Or you gotta realize when you're Robin and not Batman.

Jerry Rice Jr. follows in the footsteps of ... Nate Montana?

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 20 Mei 2014 | 23.50

Jerry Rice Jr. didn't get picked during the NFL draft earlier this month, but he's getting a shot at latching on with one of the teams his superstar father played for -- the San Francisco 49ers.

Rice, who had a tryout with the Baltimore Ravens last weekend, tweeted Monday that he's going to work out with the 49ers this weekend.

Now that should be something really special for both Rice and the fans in San Francisco.

But doesn't it sound a little familiar?

It should, because just last year Nate Montana, son of legendary 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, got a couple of workouts with the 49ers after not hearing his name called on draft day.

While the younger Montana didn't end up wearing the scarlet and gold like his dad, you never know what might happen with Rice Jr., who didn't get a job with the Ravens but seems to have impressed Coach John Harbaugh.

"Jerry Rice Jr. has done a nice job," Harbaugh said of Rice, who had 19 receptions for 73 yards in three years with UCLA and UNLV. "He's a really good athlete. He doesn't have his dad's size, but he sure got his athleticism. He runs in a real similar way. He's got that West Coast offense down. He's probably had that playbook since he was in the cradle.

"He knows all the rules of the crossing routes. He knows what to do, very good hands, real smooth athlete. He did a real nice job."

Rice told The Baltimore Sun via text the Ravens said they'd put him on their list of players to consider signing in case a receiver gets injured.

But now, at least for one weekend, 49ers fans will have the thrill of seeing a guy named Jerry Rice catching passes for them again, and Rice will have the unforgettable experience of following in his father's footsteps.

And then, unfortunately, he likely will then follow Nate Montana's footsteps out of San Francisco without a job.

Bennett Miller's 'Foxcatcher' is a true American horror story

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 19 Mei 2014 | 23.50

Outside the luxurious Carlton Hotel, a pair of genuine Soviet-made tanks with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford inside are idling in the driveway as part of a publicity stunt for the forthcoming "The Expendables 3." Inside the hotel, amused at the fuss, Bennett Miller is talking about a very different kind of filmmaking.

"I hardly read fiction, I mostly read nonfiction, I like to examine material things," the 47-year-old director of "Capote" and "Moneyball" says, looking comfortable in jeans and a grey hoodie. "My nature is to try and look past apparent truths, to pull back layers and understand the psychological motives behind phenomena. A nonfiction subject challenges you, it keeps you honest."

Miller's latest film, "Foxcatcher," which debuted Monday in competition at the Festival de Cannes with an unrecognizable Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo in the starring roles, is in many ways his most ambitious and most successful work.

In a sense "Foxcatcher" is a particularly American horror story, the real-life tale of super-rich John Eleuthere du Pont (Carell) and how his quixotic financial sponsorship of the U.S. Olympic wrestling team in general, and of gold medalist brothers Dave (Ruffalo) and Mark Schultz (Tatum) in particular, draws everyone involved into a maelstrom of seduction, rejection, betrayal and murder. It was a story the thoughtful and articulate Miller had never heard of but was drawn to immediately.

"A stranger [eventual producer Tom Heller] came up to me at a DVD signing at Tower Video in New York and gave me an envelope of newspaper clippings," the director says, remembering back to 2006. "Months later, I was throwing stuff out, I opened the envelope and the first paragraph just grabbed me.

"The first thing was the absurdity of it: One of the wealthiest guys in America had decided to build a training facility for wrestlers and become their head coach with no knowledge of the sport whatsoever. It just seemed comical."

But "Foxcatcher," named after the training facility, turned out to be "the kind of story that's funny until it's not funny, and then it's not funny at all. I'm attracted to stories of people who don't belong together, who embark on something and find themselves in places they don't belong.

"In some ways it's a small story, but yet it really felt familiar and it had resonance. For me the more micro you look at it, the bigger it becomes. Within it are themes of wealth, power, class, decline and entitlement. To me, as a story it's really fascinating and expansive and the kind of thing that could intrigue me throughout the process of making it."

That process took longer than anyone anticipated, some eight years, a familiar story when films this smart, complex and adult try to get financed. "Everyone agreed this seemed like a great film but nobody could feel confident there would be a market for it," Miller explains. "It took someone like Megan Ellison."

The films that Ellison's Annapurna Pictures has financed include "American Hustle," "Her" and "Zero Dark Thirty," and, Miller says, "to me there's nobody out there like her making decisions the way she's making decisions.

"She's a genuine and sincere film lover; she starts from there. Her decisions at her core are based on her feelings about a project. She had to suspend the disbelief of others to greenlight this film. I had a similar experience with 'Capote' and 'Moneyball.' Each required an individual to step forward and defy conventional thinking."

Staying with the project for all those years was co-star Tatum, who was "the first actor cast, before I had a script or anything."

Miller had seen Tatum in 2006's small independent "A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints" and was totally captivated. He was amazing, dangerous, animal and electric, an unhinged character and scary. I thought the filmmakers had plucked someone out of Queens and typecast him.

"Then I found out that he was from the South, the sweetest guy in the world with something of Mark Schultz's quality. As the landscape of his career completely changed, I looked the other way and held on to what I'd seen and knew about him."

Cast next, in an unflinchingly dramatic role, was Carell. "Everyone's description of du Pont, and I spoke to more than a dozen people who knew him, was that he was benign, nobody could believe he would do what he ended up doing," Miller says.

"When you're casting a murderer, I have no interest in putting a guy in there who on first glimpse you know is going to kill somebody. You want someone where you don't believe it until it happens, where the shock of it coming from this character is what is meaningful."

The role of charismatic Dave Schultz, "a truly benevolent soul, a complex guy with many layers who had a thousand best friends," was, the director says, tricky to cast.

Miller had wanted to work with Ruffalo before and it had not worked out, but this time the actor took the initiative, "he knew about the project and wanted to meet. He'd done his homework and within 48 hours I offered him the part."

Alone among the three actors, Ruffalo had had experience with wrestling — he and his father each had been accomplished in the sport in high school — and the fidelity with which it's depicted is one of the strengths of "Foxcatcher." In fact, the practice session between the brothers that starts the film is so impeccably done that Miller was able to cut an entire dialogue scene because the physical action conveyed the same information.

This openness to new situations is a hallmark of Miller's directing style, which is in part inspired by the "phenomenal performances" British director Mike Leigh's quasi-improvisational techniques elicit from his actors.

"I work on set from a big book which has an outline and various versions of scenes [the script here is by E. Max Frye and Oscar nominated "Capote" screenwriter Dan Futterman] that have been written," Miller says.

"More often than not, I go into a scene without a definitive text, during rehearsals things come up, there is a lot of improv. The process really is an exploration, one of discovery, a way to keep the acting fresh and intimate and present. I like working like that."

Miller's ultimate goal as a filmmaker, he says, "is not to be a storyteller but an observer. My films are inquiries. I've chopped down all the signposts, I really resist taking moral positions.

"There's a natural human tendency to judge things before we understand them. That simplifies things but deprives us of insights that could be taken from looking more carefully, being unflinching, taking a hard look at something we have an aversion to looking at.

"This film really wants to stare at the ambiguity of what happens. The discomfort of ambiguity is an essential aspect of the story. It pulls back the bow for a long time. It's not meant to crystallize until the end."

Because of the complexity of his material and the way he works, the director acknowledges, "there is no fast way to do this, it has to gestate," which is one reason "Foxcatcher" was not ready for its scheduled debut at last year's AFI Fest.

"You can't rush an edit like this," says Miller, giving full credit to his team of Stuart Levy, Conor O'Neill and Jay Cassidy. "The potential of film is a lot more complex and dynamic than dialogue. You have to listen and craft the musicality of the moments. It's infinitely complex, as complex as you are capable of managing over 10 lifetimes. The editing is where the film is made."

Serena Williams beats Sara Errani for third Italian Open title

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 18 Mei 2014 | 23.50

Serena Williams kept the crowd from being a factor in a 6-3, 6-0 victory over 10th-seeded home favorite Sara Errani to win the Italian Open for the third time Sunday.

Errani was bidding to become the first Italian to win the tournament in nearly 30 years but the top-ranked Williams quickly took control in both sets and Errani appeared slowed by a left thigh problem.

Errani left the court for an injury timeout while trailing 5-3 in the opening set and came back with her thigh bandaged. On the final point before she left the court, Errani pulled up and let a shot from Williams pass by her without even attempting to get to it.

"I'm sorry. You were unbelievable all week," Errani told fans during the victory ceremony, as she brushed back tears. "I tried to do my best and stayed on the court only for you."

Williams' other Rome titles came in 2002 and last year — and she went on to win the French Open on both occasions.

"I'm also sorry for Sara today," Williams told the crowd in Italian. "She really played great all week."

Later, seven-time champion Rafael Nadal was facing Novak Djokovic in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 meeting in the men's final of the last key clay-court tuneup for Roland Garros, which starts next weekend.

A left thigh problem prompted Williams to withdraw before her quarterfinal match at the Madrid Open last week but now she appears back on track for the French.

"I'm not 100 percent but I'm just kind of going on adrenaline," Williams said.

Organizers attempted to whip up patriotic fervor by having the Italian anthem sung before the players walked out onto the court, and fans continuously chanted "Sara, Sara" to try and encourage Errani in an atmosphere that more resembled a Davis Cup or Fed Cup setting.

But Williams jumped out to a 3-0 lead and while Errani had a few chances to get back into the first set, Williams overpowered the Italian with her serve — she had seven aces to Errani's none — and overall attacking game.

Still, Errani could console herself by becoming the first Italian runner-up in the tournament since Raffaella Reggi took the 1985 title in Taranto.

The last Italian man to win was Adriano Panatta back in 1976.

When former Italian player Lea Pericoli asked Errani during the trophy presentation if she was "disappointed" with her showing, the crowd responded with boos and whistles. Pericoli then acknowledged that Errani's appearance in the final was an accomplishment by itself.

Injury permitting, Errani was slated to play the doubles final later with partner Roberta Vinci against Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik.

It was the 60th title of Williams' career, and a large portion of those trophies have come in recent years for the 32-year-old American.

Martina Navratilova holds the record with 167 titles and Williams needs seven more to match Billie Jean King for sixth place on the all-time list.

"I'm like a fine wine, I guess — at least my tennis is," Williams said. "My game gets better with age."
