‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ teaser showcases colorful cosmic scenes

Marvel fans excited for "Guardians of the Galaxy" got a sneak preview Friday with a short teaser featuring new footage from the colorful cosmic adventure.

The second full trailer for the Aug. 1 release will debut 10 a.m. PDT Monday during a live Facebook Q&A with cast members Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan, as well as writer-director James Gunn.

Check out the teaser below.

The Guardians first appeared in "Marvel Super-Heroes" No. 18 in 1969, and in the early 1990s, the team headlined its own comic series that ran for 62 issues. But for the new movie, Gunn took a fresh approach to the characters and the mythology, fashioning a story that, like the other Marvel films, stands on its own but also connects to the studio's other franchises, including "The Avengers."

Pratt plays the roguish antihero Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord, an interstellar scofflaw who steals a mysterious orb and finds himself on the run from powerful villain Ronan (Lee Pace), whose evil plans threaten the universe.

Quill is forced to team up with a squad of alien misfits to battle the galactic threat — a group that includes a gun-toting creature named Rocket Raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper; Zoe Saldana's green alien assassin Gamora; Bautista's vengeful Drax the Destroyer; and a tree-like humanoid Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel.

In addition to the five guardians, the cast also features Michael Rooker as Yondu, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Benicio del Toro as the Collector, Glenn Close as Nova Prime Rael and John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey.

"Doctor Who" star Gillan plays the sadistic villain Nebula. In a recent interview with Hero Complex, the actress said she shaved her head for the role, saying goodbye to her signature red tresses, and underwent rigorous stunt training – or, in her words, "action hero boot camp."

"She's got a cybernetic arm, a cybernetic eye, she's completely blue and bald and she's like a master of weaponry," Gillan said of her character. "Whenever I would walk around, people were literally gasping at me, and I was like, 'Sure, this is worth five hours [in the makeup chair] for this.'"
