Diana Ross will hold the first concert in Brooklyn's Kings Theatre in nearly four decades. The shuttered vintage movie theater whose lavish interior was inspired by the Palace of Versailles and the Paris Opera House will reopen Feb. 3.
It opened in 1929 as one of Lowe's "wonder theatres" in the greater New York area. The idea was to lay on the French Renaissance Revival decor to give early film fans a luxury experience.
"Before falling into disrepair, the Kings Theatre featured high curved ceilings, ornate plaster walls, gold-leaf ornament, crystal chandeliers, and a glazed terra-cotta ornamental facade," a statement about the theater says.
Almost $94 million was spent on restoring and re-creating the theater's 3,000-seat interior. The building, which is recognized by the National Registry of Historic Places, closed in 1977 and was bought by the city of New York in 1983.
A consortium called the ACE Theatrical Group worked to bring back the Kings starting in 2013. When it opens next year, the theater will offer live theatrical performances, dance, community events and concerts when it opens next year.
And free tours of the theater will be offered too.
Tickets to the inaugural concert featuring Motown legend Ross go on sale at 9 a.m. PST Friday at KingsTheatre.com, Ticketmaster.com and (800) 745-3000. Price range is $80.50 to $126.
