"Chappie" won a slow weekend at the box office, premiering to $13.3 million, according to studio estimates.
The Sony Pictures film fell just short of its $14-million studio projection but outpaced fellow newcomers 20th Century Fox's "Unfinished Business" and Fox Searchlight's "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel."
Last week's top film, "Focus," fell 46% in ticket sales and came in second with about $10 million.
The Warner Bros. caper, which cost about $50 million to make, follows con artist Nicky (Smith), who trains and eventually falls for Jess (Margot Robbie).
Fox Searchlight's "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" exceeded expectations and came in third with about $8.6 million.
"Kingsman: Secret Service" and "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" came in fourth and fifth, adding $8.3 million and $7 million respectively.
Fox's "Unfinished Business," opened at No. 10 with $4.8 million.
