A doughnut shop cashier was fatally stabbed Tuesday night in Florence after he apparently followed a thief who took money from the register while ordering food, police said.
The 29-year-old cashier was working at the shop at Florence Avenue and Broadway at about 9:20 p.m. when a man in his 30s walked in and placed an order, Los Angeles police Officer Liliana Preciado said.
As the cashier opened the register, the man reached over and grabbed money, she said.
It is unclear what happened next, but the pair ended up in a nearby alley where a struggle ensued and the cashier was stabbed.
He was taken to an area hospital, where he died of his wounds.
Detectives are looking for clues that could lead them to the culprit, Preciado said.
The man's death is the eighth homicide in Florence in the last 12 months, according to The Times Homicide Report.
