New York City Ballet's Wendy Whelan's first stop after she retires from the company Oct. 18? Downtown Los Angeles.
The Colburn School announced Monday that Whelan will do a four-day residency this month at its new Colburn Dance Academy, a program that launched this fall.
The academy, just weeks into its inaugural semester, was founded by former New York City ballet principal dancer Jenifer Ringer. L.A. Dance Project's Benjamin Millepied serves as artistic advisor.
"I am so thrilled to have an artist such as Wendy Whelan as our first guest Master Teacher and Performing Artist," Ringer said. "She has inspired me since the moment I first saw her dance and I know she will have an extraordinary impact on our students here at the Dance Academy."
As part of Whelan's residency, which will take place from Oct. 30-Nov. 2, she will perform in Christopher Wheeldon's ballet "After the Rain" at the school's 400-seat Zipper Hall on Grand Avenue.
The performance will also feature NYCB principal dancer Jared Angle as well as conservatory students Simone Porter -- who performed with the L.A. Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl last month -- on violin and Albert Cano Smit on piano. Ringer will moderate a Q&A afterward.
Whelan will also be teaching technique classes to the 12 pre-professional students at the academy throughout the week of her residency.
