The United States and its allies are dedicated to "degrading and destroying" Islamic State militants but need partners in the Middle East to join in the fight, President Obama said Friday at a news conference as the NATO summit wrapped up in Wales.
"Our goal is to act with urgency but also make sure we're doing it right, that we have the right targets, that there's support on the ground … that we have a strong political coalition," he said.
The president acknowledged the extremists' "significant capabilities" but called on Iraqi security forces and others in the region to join in the efforts to fight the group.
"It is absolutely critical that we have Arab states, and specifically Sunni-majority states, that are rejecting the kind of extremist nihilism that we're seeing out of ISIL that say, 'That is not what Islam is about,' and are prepared to join us actively in the fight," he said, using the acronym for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, another name that Islamic State is known by.
Also at the summit, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel met with their counterparts from key allies in an effort to formalize a coalition to combat the militants. Kerry said the group should agree upon on a course of action before the U.N. General Assembly meetings in late September.
