Mourners prepared to attend a Friday afternoon memorial service at a suburban Miami synagogue in honor of Steven Sotloff, days after militants from the group Islamic State released a video showing the freelance journalist was beheaded.
Groups and governments around the world have reacted angrily to the deaths of Sotloff and the earlier execution of another journalist, James Foley, at the hands of the fundamentalist Islamic group which has been fighting in Syria and Iraq. The group has said it killed the journalists in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes targeting them in northern Iraq. It has also threatened to execute a British man being held hostage.
The memorial service is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest, Fla., where Sotloff grew up and his parents still live. Rabbi Terry Bookman told reporters that the memorial service will be open to the public at the temple whose school Sotloff attended as a child. Sotloff's mother, who issued a plea that her son's life be spared, still teaches preschool there.
Sotloff worked as a journalist for several publications, including Time and Foreign Policy magazines. The 31-year-old went missing in August 2013 while covering the Syrian civil war.
In addition to being Jewish, Sotloff was also an Israeli citizen, a fact hidden until after his death in an attempt to keep the hostage safe. The killers are not believed to have known about Sotloff's connections to Judaism or Israel.
Barak Barfi, who has been serving as a family spokesman, told reporters on Wednesday that Sotloff dedicated his life to telling the story of people at war.
"Steve was no hero, like all of us, he was mere man who tried to find good concealed in a world of darkness and if it did not exist, he tried to create it," Barfi said.
