Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran could potentially miss the rest of his first season in New York following his wife's miscarriage.
Beltran, who left the team on Tuesday to attend to an unidentified family matter, announced it on Facebook.
"Life took away the blessing of having my first boy," Beltran wrote in Spanish. "I believe in God and I am thankful for all his many blessings, like my beautiful family, friends, fans, and career. Everything happens and will happen according to God's perfect timing and my wife and I accept it that way. Thank you for all the love and messages."
Manager Joe Girardi told the New York Daily News he was unsure when Beltran would rejoin the team. The Yankees are six games behind for a wild-card spot in the playoffs with 11 games left to play.
Beltran, 37, has been limited to 108 games with the Yankees this season because of an injury. He signed a three-year deal with New York in the off-season after helping St. Louis reach the World Series.
"It puts things in perspective, you know what I mean?" Yankees second baseman Derek Jeter said. "We're here, we're playing a game and we're trying to win games, but the bottom line, family is much more important than anything that happens on a baseball field.
"He should take as much time as he needs. I don't know how much time that's going to be, but he should. I can't imagine how he feels."
