A federal appeals court Monday blocked Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's denial of driver's licenses for young immigrants who received immigration relief and work permits under an Obama administration program, the AP reported.
The ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with plaintiffs that the ban unequally harmed young immigrants.
Brewer had issued an executive order banning driver's licenses to some youths who had qualified for the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
The program, which President Obama created in 2012 through an executive order, protects some youths who are in the country illegally from deportation and authorizes them to live and work in the United States for two years.
A federal judge last year upheld Brewer's order but stated that immigration activists would probably prevail on their claim that the governor's order violates guarantees of equal protection under the U.S. Constitution.
