CAPTIONS

Red carpet watch

Initial reports stated that a sewage pipe had burst near the Beverly Hilton, flooding the red carpet. But the actual problem was a sprinkler malfunction, depositing a much cleaner form of water under the feet of Hollywood's most hoity-toity. Still, in the ulta-controlled, ultra-pampered world of awards shows, even a minor malfunction such as this merited extensive discussion in the media. At least the weather remained pleasant. (Jason H. The 71st Golden Globe Awards are in the books, and once again we are left to figure out what it all means.

Join Los Angeles Times staff writers Glenn Whipp and Steven Zeitchik for a little post-Golden Globes live chat discussion at 10:30 a.m. PST on Monday.

Zeitchik and Whipp will run down the winners, debate who received the biggest awards-season boost from the evening and do their best to explain any weird (no doubt, alcohol-related) Golden Globes fun.

FULL COVERAGE: Golden Globes 2014 | Red carpet | Best & worst

Steve McQueen's harrowing "12 Years a Slave" won the top film drama award, while David O. Russell's Abscam-inspired "American Hustle" took the award for best film, comedy or musical, as well as actress for Amy Adams and supporting actress for Jennifer Lawrence.

The AIDS drama "Dallas Buyers Club" also performed well: Matthew McConaughey won his first Golden Globe as actor in a drama, as did Jared Leto for supporting actor. Cate Blanchett received the actress in a drama award for Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine."

Leonardo DiCaprio took home the trophy for actor in a comedy or musical film for his role as a hedonistic broker in "The Wolf of Wall Street." And Alfonso Cuaron won best director for his lost-in-space thriller "Gravity."
