Deadmau5 was one of the first artists atop the wave of big-tent EDM in the U.S. Now he's making one of its most high-profile label departures.
The Toronto producer, born Joel Zimmerman, has announced a new deal with Astralwerks. The respected electronica-focused imprint under EMI is also home to peers including Swedish House Mafia, Chemical Brothers, Pet Shop Boys, Eric Prydz and Air.
He joins the label after departing his longtime home at Ultra Records, which also housed his Mau5trap label imprint. He'll be taking both his artist albums and his label to his new home at Astralwerks.

The first release under the new arrangement will be a compilation album "We Are Friends Vol. 2," with cuts by Deadmau5's side project BSOD, Kairo Kingdom, James Njie and others. It's due out Nov. 12, featuring two new Deadmau5 tracks, "Your Ad Here" and "Suckfest9001."
Astralwerks general manager Glenn Mendlinger said in a statement that "Joel is an absolute trail blazer, pushing the boundaries of electronic music, production and the live experience to places unimaginable without his vision and contribution."
Deadmau5's next scheduled L.A. gig is Nov. 3, atop the bill at HARD Day of the Dead alongside Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Nero and others.
